Rently Rental Terms and Conditions

Last updated: February 24, 2026

Effective date: February 24, 2026

1. Introduction and Scope

These Rental Terms and Conditions ("Rental Terms") govern the rental of items through the Rently platform (accessible at rently.co.za). By listing items for rent or placing rental orders on Rently, you agree to be bound by these Rental Terms in addition to our Legal Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Rently acts as an intermediary marketplace connecting store owners who list items for rent ("Store Owners") with individuals who wish to rent those items ("Renters"). Rently does not own the rental items and is not a party to the rental transaction between Store Owners and Renters.

2. Definitions

  • Rental: An item or service listed on the Rently platform available for rent.
  • Store: A virtual storefront on Rently through which Store Owners list their rentals.
  • Organisation: A franchise or multi-store entity that manages multiple stores on the platform.
  • Order: A confirmed rental booking comprising one or more order items.
  • Order Item: An individual rental within an order, with its own pricing, dates, and status.
  • Stock Item: A specific variant or unit of a rental with its own attributes, condition, images, and availability.
  • Pricing Option: A pricing configuration (Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Rental Window) with associated rates and availability schedules.
  • Week Option: A day-and-time availability schedule applied to pricing options, delivery options, or collection options.
  • Excluded Date: A specific date or date range during which a rental is unavailable for booking.
  • Cancellation Policy: The cancellation terms configured by the Store Owner for a specific rental.
  • Self-Insurance: A condition documentation process for recording the state of a rental at collection and return.
  • Rental Template: A reusable rental configuration that can be applied to new rental listings.
  • Success Ambassador: A trained platform advisor who assists users with store operations and rental processes.

3. Eligibility and Verification Requirements

To participate in rental transactions on Rently, whether as a Store Owner or a Renter, you must satisfy the following verification requirements:

  • Email verification: Your email address must be confirmed.
  • Phone verification: Your mobile phone number must be verified via SMS.
  • Identity verification: You must complete our identity verification process, which includes a liveness check, identity document submission (OCR processing), and facial comparison between your document photo and liveness image.

These verification requirements exist to protect all parties involved in rental transactions and to maintain a trusted marketplace. Additional verification may be required for certain operations such as bank account validation for withdrawals or business verification for organisation owners.

4. Store Owner Obligations

As a Store Owner listing items for rent on Rently, you agree to the following obligations:

4.1 Accurate Listings

  • Provide accurate, complete, and truthful descriptions of your rental items, including condition, features, and any limitations.
  • Upload clear, accurate, and current photographs of your rental items.
  • Configure appropriate attributes (size, colour, material, etc.) that accurately represent the available variants.
  • Assign correct categories, tags, and relevant attributes to ensure proper discoverability.

4.2 Pricing Configuration

  • Set fair and transparent pricing for all pricing options (Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Rental Window periods).
  • Clearly configure availability schedules (Week Options) for each pricing option so renters understand when pricing applies.
  • Ensure that listed prices include all mandatory charges or clearly disclose any additional fees.

4.3 Availability Management

  • Keep your availability calendar up to date, including excluded dates for periods when items are unavailable.
  • Accurately configure stock item quantities and variants to reflect actual available inventory.
  • Promptly update availability when items are damaged, under repair, or otherwise unavailable.

4.4 Delivery and Collection

  • Accurately describe all available delivery and collection options with correct addresses, time windows, and any associated costs.
  • Configure Week Options for delivery and collection to reflect actual operational hours.
  • Fulfil delivery and collection commitments as described in the listing.

4.5 Cancellation Policy

  • Configure a clear and fair cancellation policy for each rental, specifying notice period requirements, cancellation fee types (fixed or percentage), and any deposit fee implications.
  • Honour your cancellation policy terms as configured.

4.6 Self-Insurance

  • Where self-insurance is enabled, properly configure whether physical or digital collection mode applies.
  • Complete condition documentation at the point of rental handover and return as required.
  • Maintain honest and accurate condition records.

4.7 Rules, Regulations, and Custom Terms

  • Disclose all applicable rules and regulations for your rental items upfront.
  • If you attach custom terms documents to a rental (up to 2 documents), ensure they are clear, lawful, and do not conflict with these Rental Terms or applicable law.

4.8 Templates

  • You may use Rental Templates (your own or system templates provided by Rently) to streamline rental creation. Templates apply default configurations that you may further customise for each individual rental.

5. Renter Obligations

As a Renter placing orders on Rently, you agree to the following obligations:

  • Accurate information: Provide truthful and accurate booking information, including dates, delivery address, and contact details.
  • Timely payment: Complete payment promptly when placing an order. Orders that are not paid within the payment window will expire automatically.
  • Proper use: Use rented items responsibly, in accordance with their intended purpose, and in compliance with any rules and regulations set by the Store Owner.
  • Timely return: Return rented items on or before the agreed end date and time, in the same condition as received (fair wear and tear excepted).
  • Self-insurance compliance: Where self-insurance applies, participate in the condition documentation process at collection and return as required.
  • Honest reviews: When leaving reviews for rentals, stores, or users, provide honest and fair feedback based on your actual experience.
  • Adherence to terms: Comply with any additional rental-specific rules, regulations, and custom terms documents attached to the rental listing.

6. Order Process

6.1 Date Selection and Availability

The Rently ordering system displays rental availability based on multiple factors including:

  • Configured pricing options and their associated availability schedules (Week Options)
  • Available delivery and collection options for the selected dates
  • Current booking status (fully booked, partially booked, or available)
  • Excluded dates set by the Store Owner
  • Available stock item inventory

Dates are shown as available, partially booked, or unavailable to help you select appropriate rental periods.

6.2 Best Price Calculation

After selecting your start and end dates, Rently automatically calculates the best available price based on the Store Owner's pricing option configurations. The system evaluates all applicable pricing options (Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Rental Window) to determine the most favourable rate for the selected period.

6.3 Attribute and Stock Selection

Where a rental has multiple stock items with different attributes (e.g. size, colour), you will be presented with available options based on stock availability for your selected dates.

6.4 Multi-Item Orders

Rently supports orders containing multiple rental items. Each order item is tracked individually with its own status, pricing, dates, and status updates.

6.5 Payment

Payment is processed through our integrated payment gateways (Ozow or Yoco). Orders must be paid within the payment window or they will automatically expire. All prices are displayed in South African Rand (ZAR).

6.6 Order Status Updates

Both Store Owners and Renters receive order status updates through in-app notifications, email, and/or push notifications as orders progress through their lifecycle.

7. Pricing and Fees

  • Platform transaction fees: Rently charges transaction fees on rental orders. The base fee rates are configured at the platform level and may vary between individual users and store accounts.
  • Gamification discounts: Users who achieve higher trust scores, earn badges, and unlock titles may receive reduced transaction fees for themselves and/or their customers. Discounts are automatically applied where eligible.
  • Discount stacking: Multiple eligible discounts (gamification, promotional, etc.) may be stacked according to platform rules.
  • Payment gateway fees: Payment processing fees charged by Ozow or Yoco are applied as part of the transaction.
  • Wallet operations: Rental proceeds are credited to Store Owner wallet accounts with full ledger tracking. Withdrawals to verified bank accounts are subject to configurable payout hold periods.

8. Cancellation and Refunds

  • Each rental listing has a configurable cancellation policy set by the Store Owner, which specifies the required notice period and any applicable cancellation fees.
  • Notice period: The minimum advance notice required before the rental start date to qualify for cancellation. Notice periods may be specified in hours, days, or months.
  • Cancellation fees: May be configured as a fixed amount, a percentage of the rental price, or a percentage of any deposit paid.
  • Refund processing: Approved refunds are processed to the original payment method or credited to your Rently wallet, depending on the circumstances and processing timelines.
  • Rently reserves the right to mediate cancellation disputes through our support case management system.

9. Self-Insurance

Rently provides a self-insurance system to protect both Store Owners and Renters by documenting the condition of rental items:

  • Physical collection mode: Condition documentation is completed in person at the point of physical handover of the rental item.
  • Digital collection mode: Condition documentation is completed digitally through the platform (where enabled).
  • Condition documentation: Both parties are expected to submit photographic evidence and descriptions of the item's condition at the time of collection and return.
  • Disclosure timing: Depending on configuration, condition documentation may be shared immediately with both parties or held until a dispute is raised.
  • Store defaults: Store Owners may configure default self-insurance settings that apply to all their rentals, with the option to override settings on a per-rental basis.

Self-insurance documentation is used to resolve disputes regarding item condition and any associated damage claims.

10. Reviews and Ratings

  • Eligibility: You may only review a rental you have actually rented, a store you have rented from, or a user you have engaged with through a completed transaction.
  • Review types: Different review criteria apply to different review targets:
    • Rental reviews: Quality, value for money, accuracy of description, and overall satisfaction.
    • Store reviews: Professionalism, responsiveness, and overall service quality.
    • User reviews: Responsiveness, reliability, and communication.
  • Content guidelines: Reviews must be honest, relevant, and respectful. Reviews that are abusive, defamatory, fraudulent, or that contain personal information of other users may be removed.

11. Trust and Gamification Impact on Rentals

Rently's gamification system directly impacts the rental experience:

  • Trust scores: Calculated based on your orders, reviews, account maturity, verifications, academy progress, and overall platform engagement. Higher trust scores indicate a more reliable platform participant.
  • Trust gating: Store Owners may configure minimum trust score or title requirements for their stores or individual rentals. If you do not meet these requirements, you will be informed of what is needed to qualify.
  • Fee discounts: As you earn badges and unlock titles through the gamification system, you may receive reduced platform fees on orders you place and/or reduced fees for customers who rent from your store.

12. Dispute Resolution

If a dispute arises in connection with a rental transaction:

  • Either party may open a support case through Rently's case management system.
  • Rently's support team will review the case, including any self-insurance documentation, order records, communication history, and other relevant evidence.
  • Rently will aim to mediate a fair resolution. Decisions may include full or partial refunds, fee adjustments, or other appropriate remedies.
  • If you are unsatisfied with the outcome, you may escalate the matter through the applicable legal channels.

13. Prohibited Activities

The following activities are prohibited on the Rently platform in relation to rental transactions:

  • Listing items that are illegal, stolen, counterfeit, or unsafe for rental.
  • Providing false or misleading information in rental listings, reviews, or order communications.
  • Manipulating pricing, availability, or reviews to gain an unfair advantage.
  • Circumventing the Rently platform to conduct transactions directly outside the system.
  • Using rented items in ways that violate applicable laws or the Store Owner's rules and regulations.
  • Harassment, abuse, or intimidation of other users through platform communication channels.
  • Fraudulent cancellation claims or insurance documentation.

14. Limitation of Liability

Rently acts as an intermediary platform and does not own, inspect, or guarantee the condition of rental items. To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • Rently is not liable for the quality, safety, legality, or suitability of any rental item listed on the platform.
  • Rently is not liable for any loss, damage, injury, or expense arising from the use of rented items.
  • Rently is not liable for the actions or omissions of Store Owners, Renters, or any other users.
  • Rently's total liability in connection with any rental transaction shall not exceed the platform fees collected for that transaction.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable South African law, including the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.

15. Amendments

Rently reserves the right to amend these Rental Terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated through the platform via notification. Your continued use of the platform for rental transactions after such changes constitutes acceptance of the amended terms.
